The International Seminar: Who’s Afraid of Gender? is designed to be a space to discuss Judith Butler’s new book and collectively reflect on anti-gender politics from transdisciplinary and transnational perspectives. According to Butler, the grotesque attack she was the target of in São Paulo in 2017, inspired her to write this new book. Seven years after that unfortunate episode, a strong symptom of the escalation of the ultra-right and its anti-gender agenda in Brazil and around the world, the Seminar will explore how the elaborations of her new work converge with Brazilian debates on gender, sexuality, and their many intersections. It will also examine the current state of anti-gender offensives transnationally and in Brazil.
What anti-gender politics intersect with current trends of de-democratization and neo-authoritarianism? What power disputes do they involve? What are their main targets and effects?
The International Seminar: Who’s Afraid of Gender? will be held at the Federal University of Minas Gerais/Brazil from January 15 to 17, 2025.
